The trick is to get from up in your HEAD to your HANDS quickly!
At the beginning a release of creative energy can be unlocked by doing just a little with something close at hand. This could be reaching for some crayons and an old fashioned colouring in book, maybe some moulding clay or even working with a few ingredients in the kitchen such as arranging a fruit bowl.
This act of grabing something close by, regardless of what it is, just to get you out of your head and start using your hands is simple but effective. You'll find once you get started on something easy, you'll want to move into your actual creative project and you will have pulled down your resistance wall to getting started, because now your hands will be busy, your mind will focus in on what you are doing and you'll start having to use your artistic eye and make creative choices.
It is important to move out of design phase early on and into your body, otherwise all your best ideas will never eventuate!
Often on my way to my paint brushes, I'll visit the piano. You might think, "but you were planning to paint!", and that's exactly right but a little time at the piano seems to release the pressure caused by my own expectations about what I want to create in my art.
I've noticed there's often underlying fears lurking that have been causing the avoidance to create to begin with. Perhaps I'm not sure how, or whether my creativity will be there when I need it to be. Going to the piano first is a side step but one worth taking, as its the 'other thing' I could do, not the 'real thing' I should do! Either way, once I've started I find it easier to move into the actual creative endevour that I need to pursue.
I've found that using what's 'easy' or even 'different', tricks my mind in what I'm doing and as long as I don't expend too much energy there (ie. the rest of the day playing the piano) it usually helps creativity start to flow from my mind to my body, to the place where I can say, "Now I'm in my process".
Regardless of how that happens, the important thing is - I'm there! Submerging myself into the waters of creativity in one way or another, opens the door making any creative task after that is much easier to do.
So the truth is, there's always something close at hand! Even if its using your spoon to stir your tea in a variety of ways - guess what!? ... you've started!
